Celebrating the Services who secured 250 years of independence.
As
Americans celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of
Independence – the Semiquincentennial – we should also commemorate the
founding of the military services that gained our independence and have
defended us for 250 years. In 1775, the Navy and Marine Corps were
founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and launched their fight for
American independence from the Delaware River and the Secretary of the
Navy has agreed with Homecoming 250’s efforts and has directed the Navy
and Marine Corps to celebrate the Navy and Marine Corps 250th birthdays
in Philadelphia and adjacent Camden, New Jersey in 2025.
This special week will serve up a diverse selection of events
ensuring there's something for everyone. Ship enthusiasts will love
kicking off the celebrations with the Parade of Naval and Marine Corps
ships. Visitors can take a step back in time by touring historic ships
like the cruiser Olympia, submarine Becuna, and Battleship New Jersey.
And if you look to the skies, you’ll see a variety of heritage and
active-duty aircraft highlighted by a spectacular flyover by the Blue
Angels on October 13. History enthusiasts will be able to delve into
many exhibits featured at several esteemed museums in Philadelphia. Race
Marines and sailors at the 250th Anniversary run. Cheer on your
military branch at the Army Navy Cup! No matter how you celebrate, come
join us for an incredible 250th Navy and Marine Corps Birthday!
These celebrations will shine a spotlight on the birthplace of our nation, honor the Navy and Marine Corps, salute the men and women of all backgrounds who have defended America and the world for 250 years, inspire our youth and remind us what unites us.
